I particularly appreciate that the pieces are fairly chunky; similar to Topito, another stacking game I’ve played, I think that makes them easier to grab and manipulate for players with a bit less manual dexterity. When Rowan was about 2 to 2 ½ we moved on to adding the die to the game and explaining to him what to do with each die roll.

It’s a bit more about managing weight than playing with interesting physics, which is always my favorite part of stacking games. Each player is given 7 different animal tokens and they roll a die and either stack or pass an animal to another player. On your turn, you roll a die to determine which action you must take: will it be adding one or more animals to the pyramid in the middle, or will you get lucky and be able to offload one of your pieces onto someone else or place it on the table to extend the base?

If there are fewer than four players, randomly distribute the remaining ones so that everyone gets roughly an equal amount. Mountain: You may place an animal such that it’s touching the mountain panorama (or an animal already touching the mountain panorama). While I don’t think Animal Upon Animal is a great 2-player game, I do think it’s a great game that excels at kids having fun while they learn.

After discussing my wife’s question with anyone who would listen, I was directed by a mutual friend to a small booth by the game company HABA. Players will flip over sun tiles, revealing an animal, and attempt to add that animal to the animal tower without knocking it over. But the introduction of the random die roll at the start of every turn keeps the possibilities for kids alive. If animals fall off, you must take up to two of the animals that have fallen and add them back to your animal collection. They must be skillfully careful: Who will position the penguin on top of the crocodile, the sheep on top of the penguin, the serpent on the sheep? The collapse rules in the 2-player game still makes Animal Upon Animal competitive but one (or more) collapse most likely does take one of the player out the game with this player count.
