Silicone-coated dressings, such as Mepitel ® One with Safetac ® technology, can overcome the problems of adherence to the wound and damage to the surrounding skin (White, 2005; White, 2008) resulting in minimal pain for patients. It can be used as a protective dressing over IV sites when the IV device is secured through adhesive tape or sutures. The nature of the bond that forms between Mepitel and the skin surface is such that the dressing can be removed with minimum pain and without damaging delicate new tissue.

The Safetac layer seals around the wound edges, preventing the exudate to leak onto the surrounding skin, thus minimises the risk of maceration.
