About this deal

If you’re taking part it would be great if you leave a link so I can take a look at what you’ve chosen. Gabriel is a silversaint, a member of a holy brotherhood dedicated to defending the realm and church from the evil creatures of the night.

We still have some of the best stuff from first: Gabe and Dior's complex relationship, deep world building, bloody action all over the place, underdog characters you just can't help but root for, villains you want to behead yourself, and a little humor to light the gritty world we're transported to. But prepare yourself to be absolutely wrecked, because Kristoff will not be denied his turn at the vein. That doesn’t mean though that you can effectively rip off what the Davinci Code by Dan Brown, and no doubt countless of other books, have done before you.A huge thank you to HarperVoyager for sending me an ARC copy of 'Empire of the Vampire' by Jay Kristoff. Empire of the Vampire is the verbal account of Gabriel de León – Silversaint, half-blood and killer of the Forever King. While I am beyond thankful to be chosen as an ARC reader for this book, I'm actually sad/mad at myself! Gabriel de Leon, the last living vampire hunter, is held prisoner awaiting execution for killing the Forever King, Fabien Voss. Granted, you were a little interested at first, but now the supermarket is closing and he’s not heard the tannoy announcing they need to close soon.

Gabriel de León is a silversaint: a member of a holy brotherhood dedicated to defending realm and church from the creatures of the night. It was flawless in expressing certain emotions and experiences, the kind that are elusive and hard to explain, even from within the confines of a fantasy novel with fictional characters. I would not recommend nor gush about it, it would just be a thing for me, like all the books I read are. Empire feels like you’re a kid and your mum has bumped into her boring friend at the supermarket and he won’t stop talking. Mind I had no idea of the issues around Jay Kristoff as I’d never heard of him and haven’t read the Nevernight books (although I probably will now). Their relationship is heartbreaking and heart pounding to behold as they try and negotiate their meaning to each other, not daughter, not father, not mentor, not friend.

Dior, Celene, and several other female characters take center stage in this book, with Gabe taking a backseat.

Seriously, so few books I’ve read made me hate and love them as much as I did for Empire of the Vampire. The language, too, though I could have done without the “thee’s” and “thou’s” used by the elder vamps; it felt artificial at times, particularly in contrast to the modern language, which uses many French words. While I loved the characters in the first book, I found myself adoring the ones introduced in book 2.
