About this deal

Find out what produce grows locally and organise a Farm Visit where children can learn about the conditions needed to produce different food. For disclosure reasons some small contributions (less than 4% overall) to food and drink manufacturing GVA were treated as zeros. Ask the children to work in small groups and write a list of food they think are produced in a country outside the UK. Ask the children to jot down which country they think these foods come from. Discuss the children’s ideas and ask them to explain why they think these foods are produced outside the UK.

Fibre needs water, so aim to drink at least 8-10 cups of water daily or other fluids such as herbal teas or sugar-free squash. People with diarrhoea will need to make sure they are replacing these lost fluids. Drinking water will also help to improve constipation. Increasingly, young people in the UK and similar countries have become disconnected with food production and have little understanding of how or where our food is produced.Source: Labour Market Statistics- Employee jobs by industry ( ONS)& June Survey structure statistics ( Defra). 1.4 Number of UK food and drink manufacturers by business size in 2023 Number of employees The UK has never been 100% self-sufficient in food production simply because of our desire to eat foods that cannot physically be grown in our climatic conditions. In the last 50 years, the amount of food imported into the UK has grown - currently about 40% of our food is imported (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs). An additional factor has been the desire to have all kinds of food available throughout the seasons, for example strawberries in winter, which are frequently imported from Spain. See the lesson La Producción de Fresa en España (Strawberry production in Spain) in the Geography the Language of Europe unit, for more information on this. Starter toast is made from bread, bread is made from flour, flour is made from the plant called wheat (it is milled); In some places, such as Sandwell (West Midlands) and Sefton (Sheffield), food access mapping across a big area has been carried out using sophisticated Geographic Information System (GIS) computer software. GIS mapping helps local authorities identify those areas that are furthest away from food shops, and communities that may be experiencing problems with buying healthy food. The needs assessment then helps to identify whether a food access project might be needed. This is a much more expensive process and will most likely need support from the local primary care trust or another statutory body. The UK food sector is defined as food manufacturing, food wholesaling, food retailing and non- residential catering. In terms of the standard industrial classification (SIC 2007) it is defined as: Category

The Soil Association Certification referenced that the onset of the pandemic had potentially brought about a greater appreciation for food which coincided with the growth in organics sales. As people were at home more, this led to a greater number that began cooking from scratch, baking and growing their own food. Some milk and dairy products (2-3 portions per day). If you are lactose intolerant include dairy alternatives such as soya, rice or oat milk and yoghurts that are enriched with calcium.

The origin of fresh fruit consumed in the UK is more diverse than it is for vegetables, with only 16% by volume produced domestically whereas 28% and 56% is sourced from the EU and the Rest of the World respectively in 2022. Exercise regularly, such as walking, cycling, or swimming. If finding time is difficult, incorporate it into your day. For example, cycle to work, get off a train a stop early and walk, and use steps instead of lifts when possible. History

The large majority of the food we eat is made up of raw ingredients grown by farmers from the UK and across the world. There are two main types of farming - arable and pastoral. Have a go at the arable and pastoral PowerPoint activity which will help you identify and understand the differences between these two types of farming.

In 2021 all four of the food sectors had a higher productivity than in 2020. Manufacturing increased by 3.2 per cent, wholesale increased by 1.5 per cent, retail increased by 2.3 per cent and catering increased by 10.7 per cent, the latter demonstrating nearly a full recovery from the conditions faced during the height of the pandemic. Every butcher has their own recipe, which is a closely guarded secret. Butchers follow the traditional basic recipe and add their own unique flavourings. Final output b of UK agriculture is a proxy for UK food production. The volume of all outputs fell by 10% between 2020 and 2021. In the twelve months to December 2022, employment in the agri-food sector increased by 3.3% or 132,000 jobs. Employment fell in 2022 in retailing (2.4% or 28,000 jobs), but increased in non-residential catering (7.9% or 144,000 jobs), wholesaling (4% or 8,000 jobs) and manufacturing (1.2%).Refer to the glossary for the Economic definition of Food and Agri-Food sector for the relevant SIC codes.
