About this deal

The Skill list is fairly standard. There are twenty-one Skills, divided neatly between Physical, Mental and Social. These include Art, Lore, Melee, Stealth, Streetwise, Taunt and Vehicles. Each Skill gets a paragraph of description and some sample Specialities e.g., Knives for Melee, Flattery for Charm, or History for Education. These all made sense to me, though I have seen a lot of skill lists in my time. Flowers of Expression: More of a movement than an organisation, they are a collection of artists, both mortal and Liminal. They don’t usually make moral judgements of their members and may even accept vampires into their ranks. Liminal’s system alone is worth the price of admission. So clean, so simple, so easy to customise to whatever setting you prefer. It’s more flexible than Powered by the Apocalypse, easier to explain than FATE and far simpler than Storyteller. I am tempted to make it my go-to system for running one-shots in settings that don’t have their own RPGs. Phelps, Andy, and Doris C. Rusch. 2020. “Navigating Existential, Transformative Game Design.” In Proceedings from DiGRA ’20 – Proceedings of the 2020 DiGRA International Conference: Play Everywhere: 1-4. Firstly, I’ve got lots of urban horror games — because I like them. However, I don’t think I’ve got one that specifically sets up “light heroes” and “dark anti-heroes” and says; both are core rules, key character types.

If the latter then I feel like I need some more idea of what makes them a vampire, right? Even just simple things like "Are they dead!!, i.e. would doctors see them as having no heartbeat" would be nice to make clear to the PCs. Now I know a lot of this can be hand-waved and I even really like the idea of it being different across different vampires (something like "it affects us all differently" or even "clans/family etc") but something just makes it very hard to tell a PC I would be happy with them playing one. Many RPG systems begin life in fantasy, and that’s where I know d100Lite from. How well does it cope with modern concerns?Characters in Liminal are built with points and begin with a drive. Drives are one or two sentences that describe the character’s motivation and this is a game where retiring a character once they reach their goal is a consideration. It is not mandatory. The table of contents could have gone deeper when it comes to content like the factions, or the UK's cities and locations. Not a biggie, at the end of the day. How do we design play communities that emphasize safety and encourage bravery when exploring edges for growth? Fantasy lovers will enjoy the mythological aspects. New and story-focused gamers will love the simple mechanics. Horror gamers will appreciate the nasty creatures and investigative focus. The beautiful artwork is just the icing on the cake.

View article here The Court of the Winter King (A Scots Fae monarch): Whereas the Queen of Hyde Park represents the civilised face of the Fae, the Winter King’s influence is in wild and cold places. He avoids humanity, apart from certain ritual elements of his existence such as the taking of a wife and the murderous midwinter hunts, but he is still very powerful. Review Summary: Modern fantasy. A mostly narrative approach. And Great Britain. If there's a game to play in a lazy, half-empty pub, with both a tea and a pint on the table, this is it.It is hard to know if they are meant just as monsters for the GM (which feels a waste as there are NPC for them and I know some of my players would love the chance to play them maybe) or normal (-ish) things in the world that PC might start to play as or even be cursed/blessed to become? The more one examines the game's modern mythology and the interaction between the different types of the supernatural, the more it will creak. That, however, is expected, and besides, an experienced GM can take care of it easily. In fact, the game's limited take on the supernatural is an enormous strong point, especially when compared to what previous edition of WoD unleashed upon the unsuspecting gamers. Finally, in Liminal Outside the United Kingdom, we get a bit of information about a couple of cities in other parts of the world. I particularly liked Berlin, with its competing factions of outsider scientists, Rosicrucians, vampires and mangy shapeshifters. Also, one of the Berlin factions is called Zerfetzte Schar, which means The Tattered Crowd. And that is just damn cool. Chapter 9: Many Faces At the Games & Society Lab, we research the ways in which games can be vehicles of change and ignite processes of transformation. We are particularly interested in applied play, in which games are employed as a means to assist participants on their journeys of growth. Are they a part-Fae artist, unwillingly tied to a Fae court? A rogue wizard? A monster hunter? An academic studying occult mysteries?

Baird, Josephine. 2021. “The Missing Trans(gender) Subject: Trans Exploration, Expression and Embodiment in Video game-based-learning.” Paper presented at NordMedia 2021 Conference, Reykjavik, Iceland, August 18–20th 2021. The d100Lite (or d00Lite?) is pretty straightforward to learn but has complexities to master, such as opposed roles, assisted actions and what happens when the chance of success appears to be greater than %100 or lower than %1. Conclusion: Liminal might be a niche of an RPG, yet it easily achieves what it strives for. It won me with its embrace of story over rules, its simplicity, and its diversity. Fish, chips, and gravy on top. Investigator. The classic private detective or police officer who has found their way into places they shouldn’t be or knowledge they shouldn’t possess.
