This version of the Emerald Tablet is also found in the Kitab Ustuqus al-Uss al-Thani (Elementary Book of the Foundation) attributed to the 8th-century alchemist Jâbir ibn Hayyân, known in Europe as by the latinised name Geber. It has also been popular with nineteenth- and twentieth-century occultists and esotericists, among whom the expression " as above, so below" (a modern paraphrase of the second verse of the Tablet) has become an often cited motto. Most ancient spiritual texts are of unknown or uncertain origin, but few are as deeply shrouded in myth, legend and mystery as The Emerald Tablets of Thoth the Atlantean, and the closely associated, and more well-known Emerald Tablet, attributed to Hermes Trismegistus.

That said, there is easily a lot of stuff that isn’t Hermetic that makes use of the name or form of Hermēs or Thōth, especially the more freewheeling new age stuff that draws a lot of attraction, so there is unfortunately a good amount of confusion out there, too. The concise text was a popular summary of alchemical principles, wherein the secrets of the philosophers' stone were thought to have been described. The word corresponds to طلسم ( ṭilasm) in the Arabic text, which does indeed mean "enigma", but also "talisman" in Arabic. The Emerald Tablets share profound spiritual knowledge and insight with straight forward information on a cosmic level. In his 1143 treatise, De essentiis, Herman of Carinthia is one of a few European 12th century scholars to cite the Emerald Tablet. Word of Greek origin, from τελεσμός (itself from τελέω, having meanings such as "to perform, accomplish" and "to consecrate, initiate"); "th"-initial spellings represent a corruption.

The Emerald Tablet was translated into Latin in the twelfth century by Hugo of Santalla as part of his translation of the Sirr al-khalīqa. The Emerald Tablets of Thoth the Atlantean are shrouded in even more mystery, and their story requires one to set aside traditional beliefs and keep an open mind. It was Thoth who built the Great Pyramid of Giza as a repository for this Atlantean knowledge, and a place for initiating great souls into the Mysteries.
